They're super budget friendly, and they have different options depending on what you're looking for. If you're looking for something a little smaller, look into the Arturia MicroLab or MiniLab. It's bigger, but, it depends on your definition of "mobile." I've got a mkI (that I need to sell, I never use it personally), and, IMO, you can find one of those used in good condition for a good price. You can even connect up a foot controller for sustain. Faders, knobs, pads, 49 semi-weighted keys. It gives you a little bit of everything - a nice range to play comfortably without feeling restrained. If you're a pianist or want a good range, I'd look at the Arturia KeyLab 49. It's incredibly powerful and, if you have an iPad or an iPhone already, it's chock-full of some of the things you're looking for, including automation writing. I'd also investigate the Logic Remote app, which I've mentioned a few times. It's one less thing you need to worry about, and it will make you faster at working in Logic even when you don't have your controller connected. ![]() That said, you've provided some information on what you want, but what is "best" is a matter of personal preference.įor mobile, I'd recommend learning the key bindings for transport control. ![]() If you want something to sit on a table while you're having a Latte at Starbucks, that's going to be different than wanting a larger key bed in a small bedroom or around the house without being a full 88-key monstrosity. How about other features, like an outboard sequencer? MIDI over USB, or straight MIDI?Īnd you mentioned "mobile," but being mobile is a matter of situation. Pads/knobs/faders? Do you want to be able to input drums like an Akai on your controller, or do you want a larger 8x8 grid? Do you need faders or knobs/rotary? How many? Do you want faders motorized or is it fine if it isn't? Do you use the Logic Remote app at all, and, if so, do you want to duplicate some of that functionality, or do you want to have that as a separate controller? How about transport controls? Do you want them? Would you rather control them with shortcut keys on your keyboard? Or perhaps using Logic Remote? The answer for any "what is the best X" question is always it depends.ĭo you want weighted, semi-weighted, or non-weighted keys? Do you care about velocity, aftertouch, MPE, etc.? Or do you care about keys at all? Do you play piano or just want to input the occasional thing in the piano roll?
